WindowsXP Fax Setup

I had to replace my faxmodem (nearby lightning strike fried the old one)
and I've almost got the new one working the way I want. The following
is for WinXPPro SP2.

If I recall correctly, I used to be able to hear the modem dial and
start the fax handshake, and the modem speaker would only turn off after
the connection was established. This is useful, for example, if the
number you're calling is incorrect or has a problem (e.g., you can her a
person or answering machine pickup instead of fax machine).

The modem (Zoom Model 3025 V.92 56K-PCI Modem) behaves in this way
(speaker on until connect) when dialing a data call, which leads me to
believe that there is some option I'm missing in the fax set up. It
took me a bit of hunting to find the GUI to turn the auto answer on, but
I haven't found any way to make the change I'm looking for. Any
suggestions?

That has little to do with XP, it is your setup of your Modem. All modems
do not work alike. A US Robotics modem will do exactly what your "old"
modem did.

Actually, it has everything to do with XP -- that's what defines the GUI. The
modem is only hardware, and will do what the software tells it to do.

Further to my earlier response regarding the relevance of Windows XP to this
issue, here is an [edited] exchange with Zoom tech support. It's "top
posted," so read from the bottom up:

I regret my error. When you wrote you were using the "... WinXPPro sp2
built-in fax utility" I assumed you meant "WinXPPro" as opposed to the
"built-in fax utility." For support with the "built in fax utility" please
contact its maker. [Editorial comment: I DID mean WinXPPro -- not WinFax
Pro-- and unless this guy has a real problem reading and writing English, he's
passing the buck to Microsoft, which of course will not help unless I pay some
ridiculous fee. And yes, I have looked in "Help & Support," the Microsoft KB,
and Googled]

I'm not using WinFax Pro. I'm using the Windows XP built-in fax utility.

Hardware (the modem) is controlled by the software using it. The settings in
the WinFaxPro would control the modem's speaker. We do not support third party
hardware or software. For assistance with WinFaxPro please contact its maker,
Symantec, for support with their product. Communicate Lite is a totally
integrated Voice, Fax, Data software package that we bundle and support with
all our current Zoom modems. It may installed from the ZoomLink installer CD
that came with the modem.

I recently installed a model 3025C. I'm using it with WinXPPro sp2 built-in
fax utility. How can I configure the modem so that the modem's speaker is ON
until the fax connection is made? I'd like to be able to hear the remote
device answering -- just in case it's not a fax machine. The modem behaves
this way for data calls, but not for fax calls.
