windowsupdate keeps saying "update now"

I just loaded windows 2000 Professional. After the
install I browsed to the internet.The graphics on the
entire browser and webpage looked kind of like when
running in safe mode. I went to the windows update page
and searched for updates. It gave me a message "New
windows update software required" and then below "Update
Now" When selected, it tries then stays at "Update Now" .
Can somebody tell me what to do?

Zone Alarm firewall can cause WU problems - if you have this try disabling
it while using WU.

You can install the WU controls manually, also. See

I would like to know what ports WindowsUpdate site requests. I am running my
corporation through a squid firewall and it gets to the first page and just
sits there. Any ideas?
