I ran across this possible bug with Win2K's search tool
when searching for the song 'Nothing Else Matters'on my
local harddrive.

When I search for 'matters' I get no results. When
I search for 'else' it displays the results correctly.

Is this a bug and is there a fix?

Thanks.

- Were you looking for a file with a name of "Nothing else", or
for a file containing the text "Nothing else"?
- Please do this to substantiate your claim:
Start / Run
Type cmd {OK}
Type dir /s c:\nothing*.* > c:\song.txt {Enter}
Type notepad c:\song.txt
Now copy the text you see into your reply here in this newsgroup.

The actual filenames are:

Metallica - 01 - Nothing Else Matters.mp3
Metallica - 01 - Nothing Else Matters-2.mp3
08 - Nothing Else Matters.mp3

These are located on my J: and L: drives for
a total of six files. I search Local Drives
for "matters" and got no results.

The same exact search replacing "matters" with "else" and I get
seven hits, the six songs and another file with "else" in its name.

Start / Run

At this point I get "file not found."
Type notepad c:\song.txt

If I search for "matters" on drive J: only, it does indeed find the
files correctly. I get the same correct results when I search on drive
L: only. This is really weird!

So the question (bug?) is why I cannot find the string in question,
(matters) when searching Local Drives but *CAN* find it when I search a
single partition.

FWIW, I have five physical drives with partitions C-M.
I am running Win2K SP3.

I am unable to duplicate the bug you report. If you feel strongly
about it, and if you are prepared to fully document it, then you
should report it to Microsoft.

I ran this same procedure on my computer... and workd fine...

All of my Music files are in a separate partition on a separate physical
drive from my system drive (c:)... same for all Pictures...
...got a very useful inventory of all my MP3s and JPGs too...

From the text inventory of MP3s and JPGs, I chose some files at random and
having similar file names as Goldmember's...
ie: long file names with spaces and buried in a deep filepath...

Using windows search... I searched in exactly the same way as goldmember...
and all files matching the search parameters were found...

ONLY DIFFERENCE is my system has only 1 HDD assigned to a drive letter --
the system drive (c:)
ALL other drives/partitions are mounted through NTFS folders.

Try your search again... but tell windows to search "My Computer".
If still not found, try adding additonal drive path to the partition with
your music.... i.e. in you "My Documents folder, create new folders for
J-Drive & L-Drive... and mount them also from these locations
respectively... and try search again...

I've tried the above without any luck. I've copied the file:

Metallica - 01 - Nothing Else Matters-2.mp3

to all my root drives and nested it in several folders on my G: drive.

What I've noticed:

If I do a "Local Drives" or "My Computer" search for "matters" I get zero
hits. The result is very fast (less than second) so I don't believe it's
even looking past C:

If I search for "matters-2" I get 16 hits, which is correct.
If I search for "matters-" I also get 16 hits.

I've even gone as far as renaming the first character in "matters" to
jatters, katters, latters, natters, oatters, and patters.

When I search for these strings they show up correctly, go figure.

I have indexing turned OFF so maybe I'll turn it on and see what happens...

Are you searching for the word "matters" with or without the quotation marks
in the search parameter? You'll get different results each way...

Without, of course.

Anyway, I get the same results either way, which is zero.

If I do a Local Drives search for 'matr' I get several Matrix files
scattered over my partitions, which is correct. However, if I search for
'mat' the results are limited to just the C: partition even though it is a
Local Drives search. If you remember I have the following local partitions,
C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M, on five HDDs.

I've all but given up trying to figure out this little puzzle.
Hell, there's nothing to figure out. One string within a file is
searchable while another is not.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
