Using Windows XP SP1, all patches etc., on a Sony VIAO laptop, 700Mhz
processor, 256 MB RAM, Windows loads fine, but after logging on the
personal setting take a long time, like 30 minutes or more, to load.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Or what might be the cause?

Thanks,
Carol

While some complex setups take longer to load, we're talking a seconds or a
few minutes. The Personal Settings stage should not take 30 minutes to
load.

Does this happen with all user accounts or just some?

Are there a lot of programs in the startup group for the slow accounts?
Check Start> Run> MSCONFIG to what is loading at startup. Disable as many
of these items as you can and restart to test. If the account loads faster
than one of the startup programs is causing the slow down.

Is this slow system on a network? Try Folder Options> View and uncheck the
box to automatically check for network folders and printers.

Thanks for replying!

This only happens to some user accounts.

There are not many things starting up.

In this case the computer was set up on a wireless network. Then the
user took the laptop home where he intended to use a dialup connection.
He said he started it once and he waited at least 30 minutes for the
personal settings to load. He restarted and he was able to use the
account in a normal amount of time. Then he tried again the next day and
it took 30 minutes or more to load the personal settings.

If the laptop is going to be used at home and work, may want to delve a
little deeper into Network Connections. In the properties for TCP/IP, there
is an "Alternate Configuration" tab for systems used on more than one
network.

Another workaround that some folks use with laptops is a second hardware
profile. One for at work. One for at home. More details about creating
hardware profiles can be found in the Help and Support file.

Consider to make a selective startup to see if any application that is
loaded with your personal setting is hanging!
