Around Thanksgiving of last year I had built a new
computer using my old drives from my previous computer.
The old computer had windows xp Pro and I wanted to keep
the old data. When I stopped the XP install process, once
I could see that I would be able to use the old drives
without a problem, it has left a 'Please select the
operating system to start' message on my screen when I
boot everytime. This is not a serious issue, I am finally
tired of looking at it. I have the options of MS Windows
XP Pro and MS Windows XP Pro Setup. Since my computer is
working fine, I do not need to worry about the Setup
selection, how do i remove it so my computer boots right
to the XP Pro OS already installed?

Thanks.

Hi Scott,

open boot.ini from %systemdrive% and edit the lines:

e.g.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Remove the line next to OS that you would like to get rid of. Note. If you
remove the wrong line your PC won't boot up any more -- make sure you have a
good backup of boot.ini to restore if needed.

Mike,

Thanks for the help. Can I ask you one more bit?

This is what I see in my boot.ini, I did make a backup
too:

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[Operation Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional Setup"

Do I kill all that is after C:, to include C:?

Thanks.

Hi Scott,

yes, remove this part completly:

C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup"
