I am trying to transfer old Windows 98 files into my new Windows XP system. The old files were transferred from my old hard disk into my new hard disk and put in a folder called "Archive". Many of those old files (which worked fine in my old system) will not open now. I get the message "Windows cannot open this file:" It says Windows does not recognize the file extension. Once I identify the file type which uses that extension I don't know what to do next.

you could drag and drop the file into the app that is supposed to open.

or

right click on file and choose open, or open with and choose the app to open
it and check the box, always use the selected program to open this kind of
file.

Try a right-click on the file, then OPEN WITH. In the list that appears
choose the appropriate application to open the file and click on OK. If
the app doesn't appear in the list, BROWSE to it.

For instance, if this is a .doc file, it would be opened with WINWORD.EXE.

BUT FIRST, take care to UNcheck the "always use" box (if checked), until
you are
certain that you have chosen the correct application for the file type.

Larry:
You need to install the program(s) with which the files were created in
order to open them. For example, if you used Excel in Windows 98 to create
files, you must install Excel in Windows XP in order to open those files. If
you are able to identify the file type by examining the extension, you need
to install the approriate program to open that file type. You could also
take note of which programs you had installed on your Windows 98 system and
install them on the Windows XP system.

To add to randwulf, when a program is installed, it tells Windows what
files it will open. With out the program or with a program just copied and
not installed properly Windows does not know what to do with a file.
