Can anyone advise how to disable "Cookies"? The quantity
of unwanted advertising is to much!! Also the ads now
arriving at my computer via "Windows XP" is an
epidemic. Any suggestions on how to block these?

Well, you will have troubles with some good webpages if
you disable cookies completely. Instead, you ought to
get SpyWare Blaster (free for home users)
www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html and use it.
It will keep MOST spying-type cookies, etc., out of your
system.

As for the Messenger pop-ups, it is best to disable
Messenger service. The only good reason to leave it
running is if you are in and it is in use within a
networked environment you are part of.

To Disable Messenger (note that this Messenger is
different from MSN Instant Messenger):

--Logon or make sure you are logged in as Admin.

--Go to Start -> Administrative Tools -> Services.

--Navigate to Messenger.

--Then left click over it, then choose Properties. A
dialog box appears.

--Under _Start up type_ select Disable, then click Apply
and/or OK.

The pop-up spam will be gone because you killed the
system tool it relies on.
 
Oh yea, to get rid of the spying cookies ALREADY on your
computer:

--In IE go to Tools -> Internet Options. Under the
General tab select Delete Cookies.

Also, under the Privacy Tab in the same dialog you can
experiment with the Settings slider.

For other browsers on your computer, take the appropriate
and similar procedure to delete the cookies.

Also again, you might want to download LavaSoft's AdAware
(free for home users, you can google for it), which will
scan your entire system and remove spying slime.

It is NOT best to disable Messanger Services. Doing so would only hide
the real problem. The gaping hole into your system because you have ports
open.

To the OP. Install, or activate a firewall to block the open ports. The
Pop-ups ads are coming thru Port 135. The NetBios port. Hackers can use
this port to gain access to your computer
