new user windows xp/microsoft plus on a new dell desktop
computor wonders how to alter size, shape, version etc.,
of the icons/thumbnails, etc.

Right click on the desktop, select Properties, go to Appearance. Press
Advanced, and you can change most form of appearances. Be aware that if a
Windows XP style is activated, then some color settings will have no effect.
