While I like the inactive icon feature in Windows XP, I am wondering if there is a way I can restore the icons. After so many days XP hides the icons and places them in a inactive icon folder, I know that I can rt click on the toolbar and go to properties and uncheck the box, but it doesn't bring those inactive icons back to my desktop... any suggestions.

Doubleclick the Unused Icons folder, rightclick the program/folder you want to restore and click "Send to
Then click "Desktop (Create shortcut)"

Unused desktop shortcuts go to a folder named "Unused Shortcuts." You can
drag any of these back on to the desktop that you want.

Unused icons next to the clock (notification area) are handled differently.
These can be configured to show all of the time if that's what you prefer.
Right click on this area and select "Customize Notifications." Find the
icon that you want to display in the list that appears. Click on the text
in the Behavior column. A drop down list will appear. Select the behavior
that you want. Click OK to finish up.
