I just downloaded windowsxp. I had windows 98. After the

is no audio device. There always was.....what happened????
By "download" you must mean "installed" or "upgraded to", because if you
just "downloaded windows XP", you may not want to admit your piracy on a
Microsoft ran Newsgroup. *grin*
What happened? Simply that the software driver that made your audio device
(sound card, where you plug the speakers/headphones into - the actual
hardware) communicate with the operating system (Windows 98 before, Windows
XP now..) were not found by Windows XP during the upgrade.
You will want to go to the web page of the manufacturer of your sound card
and download the Windows XP Device Drivers for that particular piece of
hardware. It is possible, however, that your sound card will NOT function
in Windows 98. Not all manufacturers embrace new operating systems, but
instead use it as a chance to "kill off support" for old products and push
for consumers to by new and supported ones.
