When I start my computer it takes 10-15 minutes for the icons to appear on
the desk top, if they ever appear. The task bar then disappears temporarily
and clicking on anything takes forever to respond. (sometimes hours)
Sometimes the entire system just locks up and I can't do anything.

Everything seems to work normal if I start the computer in safe mode with
networking.

I have checked for virus, spyware etc., run all the scans, defrags etc. I
can find, I even purchased some software to clean up the registry and other
things.

Any ideas?

Start/Run/MSCONFIG stop all startup items then isolate. But you probably
have a virus that will have to be eradicated.

I tried the MSCONFIG route but nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. I
am afraid it may be a virus as well despite the fact that my Norton antivirus
program is up to date. Thanks for the suggestion. If you can think of
anything else let me know.

It's probably Norton that's giving you the problem.
Looks like you need to save what you can & "abandon ship" (Clean
install)

Whoa! You just mentioned the cause-------Norton.
