I did the dreded C: format enter. I decided to start
fresh and put the windows 98 disk aside and start new
with windows xp but I can be in the middle of just about
anything and it will just reboot all on this own.
I have already been to the Microsoft web site and
downloaded all the new updates and drivers and stil no
luck. Any ideas please save me.

Did you check for hardware compatibility before the upgrade?

Did you stay with FAT32 or convert to NTFS?

More details about the hardware, its age, conditions (dirt,
dust, heat, etc) would help.

Your computer may have a hardware problem. Try running
memtest86 (download from http://www.memtest86.com),
and then a full set of hardware diagnostics. (diag378,
downloadable from ftp://ftp1.dell.com/diags, after a few
complaints, will run on most non-Dell computers.) Both of
these should run with zero errors.
