Can someone tell me how to format the hard disk with
windows xp? No other versions of windows are on the
computer, so I'm not sure how to proceed.
Thanks!

Greetings --

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

If you really *must* do it, You do it as part of a reinstall of the
system after booting the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the
license agreement take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where,
hit ESC; select and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one
to be formatted at the next stage

But normally you should try an intermediate level fix first - instead of
'New Install' use Repair Installation. That will retain installed
software, data (though backup first just in case) and settings, but will
unwind all Windows Updates back to the state of the CD used (so probably
removing SP1)
