When I select turn off computer from start menu, computer says windows is
shutting down and stays like that. It never shuts down. I have to hold the
power button in for 5 seconds before the computer shuts off.

Did you ever find a Solution for your Problem ?? please let me know ,
because I have the same Problems !

i am also caught on the blue screen while power down. i have service pack 3

Reminds me of the Windows 98 days. Typically, you must have a badly
wrecked system for Windows XP to not shut down. I would consider
reinstalling Windows XP. Good luck.

I have 2 machines with XP all updates. Ever since SP3 was installed, we
occasionally have the failure to shut down problem. I have found that it
usually is fixed by a good cleaning. I run CC Cleaner every day. When I
notice flakiness in the system, I'll run Spybot, CC Cleaner, and then defrag
the drive with the OS on it.
Also, it helps to keep the email cleaned up. I use OE and it doesn't handle
more than one identity or lots of old emails in the folders well. Works for
me.
