Hey, I have a small workgroup in a office where 4 PC are
Win98 and in the last 8 months we bought a WinXP Pro PC
and a WinXP Pro Laptop.

I was trying to add the WinXP PC to the workgroup what
seem to be easy to do, but after trying to use the Wizard.
The 98 can see the XP, but the XP can not see all of the
98's. I have tried talking to DELL, but no answers to the
problem. I was trying to get the XP ready and after I do
not know what I did, I was able to see XP from 98 and
viceversa. Everything seem to be working just perfect
(sharing, printing, etc).

When I decided to move the XP to its final desk and move
the 98 to another desk. I tried to make sure everything
was Ok before I left that night and the XP was not able to
see the 98's again and the 98's were not able to copy or
do anything on the XP. I had already created accounts on
the XP same as the current users each 98.
Anyway, after a couple of months I bought a router and I
have IP's for every single PC, but the problem still
persists.

A friend made a comment that i might had something to do
with the FAT OS system in the 98's and the NFTS OS in the
XP.

Any help to get this freaking problem solved?

The problem has nothing to do with FAT vs. NTFS. Each computer knows
how to share its own disk with the other computers on the network.
File system format is irrelevant in network access.

These tips should help you get everything working:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

Thanks for very useful information. In my case connecting a WXP with W98 I
activated NetBios over TCP/IP and took away the Net BEUI according to your
recommendations and now it all works nicely.

But the printer is unwilling to install its drive routine from the CD on the
W98 as network writer. It only accepts to be a local printer. The printer,
an HP DeskJet 610C is connected to the WXP. Is it because of license
limitations?
