I am running XP XP2. I have been having problems with a slow computer. I
went to the Microsoft website and ran the Full Service Scan. The scan found
5 viruses and quarantined them. Then, the program rebooted my computer.
Now, there are no icons or toolbars or anything on my desktop (the wallpaper
is all that is visible.) I can still open any files/programs using
ctrl+alt+del and selecting new task. Can anyone help in getting windows
working properly.

If you do not have administrator rights on your workstation or do (doesn't
really matter), check to see if you have security patch MS05-051 (KB902400)
installed. This patch is known to produce the issues you are having. Also
check and make sure the following permissions are set:

C:\Windows\registration --> Everyone group should have READ permissions
C:\Windows\registration --> SYSTEM account should have FULL permissions
C:\Windows\registration --> Administrators group should have FULL permissions

Also, make sure that in the advanced tab you check the option to "allow
inheritable permissions to propagate from parent to child object".

Hope this helps

Hi folks

My problem sounds similar to alackie. When my computer boots I get the
message
"the application has failed to start because WINNET.dll was not found
reinstalling my fix this"
When I say ok I get to the desktop with no icans. Problem is Task manager
has been disable by the administrator comes up when I try ctrl-alt-del.
Basically I have a desktop with picture but I am locked out of the computer.

Ideas?
