Windows XP w/ADSL external modem

Whenever the ADSL Modem is connected to the computer, the activity light
flashes continously. This interferes with connecting to the the web site.
It will connect sometimes and sometimes it won't. Any idea how to fix this
problem?

What type of ADSL modem is it - USB or Ethernet?
