I wnat to install XP on my CP that has ME. It says it
won't work with my HP56 whatever modem. Is this
something I have to have? I use dial up internet. I
just want to XP instead of ME. I could not find the
option of removing ME on my Add and Remove programs list.

Thanks for your time!

If you want to connect to the Internet (and most people do), then you'll
want the modem to work. You might check HP's web site and see if they
have drivers for your modem that are compatible with XP.

Hi Laura,

You need to update your drivers for your modem and
possibly video and sound cards, make a careful note of
what hardware you have, the drivers can almost always be
found at driverguide.com

I had xp and took it off its the biggest load of crap I
have ever seen win 3.1 is better

Hi, Laura.

You have a few options:

1. Go ahead and upgrade to WinXP and live without an Internet connection.
:>(

2. Buy a newer modem; dial-up modems are pretty cheap these days and they
have improved a LOT since that version.

3. Before upgrading, boot into WinME and visit HP's website (www.hp.com)
and see if they have WinXP drivers for your modem - or any hints for owners
of that model.

4. Install WinXP to dual-boot with WinME. Then you can boot into WinME
whenever you want to go online. This can be a permanent arrangement, or
only until you get a new modem or WinXP drivers for your old one.
Dual-booting requires a separate volume ("drive") for each Windows
installation, so it's not a viable choice if your computer has only a single
partition, as personal computers typically do.

The one thing nobody has mentioned is that you should make sure
that your PC is capable of running XP. While the minimum specs
are quite low, performance could be very poor. XP is very demanding
when it come to resources. Check the link below:

Some people find that a PC may run Win ME or 98 just fine but
XP is very sluggish on the same machine.

I installed an XP upgrade to ME after I found there are ISP's that are
willing to send you a free external modem if your thinking about canceling
your service due to a problem with your modem and connecting but you didn't
hear it here, lol!

I borrowed mine from my sister who did that very thing. Afterwards it's easy
to upgrade your own modem. I checked first to see if my system could be
upgrade and it did....it's been headache, lol!

Even with the problems I've had I do it all over again.

Good luck Laura!

Install xp, install modem as a generic modem, if the modem is only a couple
years old this will help you get onto the net....take a note of the type
wether its v90 or x2
then after installation vbisit your modem site and download new drivers.
