Windows XP Virus Warning

I received a Windows XP message today that a virus,
W32RPC, had been detectived. The message asked me to
click either delete or cancel. I did neither. I have
Norton AntiVirus installed and update it regularly,
scanning my 'puter each week. I scanned after receive the
above message, but no virus was detected. Was the
message, itself, a virus... am I being scammed... or what?
 
Detectived should be the word of the day today. I laughed so hard I got
teary-eyeded when I read it.
 
Its impossible to say from the information you've given. Was there a title
bar on the message?

It's a poorly crafted advertising scam, trying to capitalize on
the recent W32.Blaster.Worm outbreak. There is, to date, no such
virus.

The message was, plain and simple, a popup advert, like every other popup
advert that you might get from Internet Explorer loading a web site. Try
and figure out which web site displayed it, and go tell them that if they're
going to continue showing deceitful adverts such as that one, you'll be
reporting them to your state AG's office of Consumer Affairs, as engaging in
unlawful advertising practices (because, quite clearly, no virus was there
to detect, and there is no virus of that name).

Then stop visiting that web site.
