Windows XP update problem

When automatic update downloads and ready to install, I click on install and it dialog comes up but it does not start installing

I think consequently, when I shut down the computer, it freezes when it reaches "windows is shutting down".

I tried to update from Windows XP update page,,,,,, it also freezes at 0% when I click on scaning your computer........

"Scan Hangs at 0%"
"Scan for updates freezes or stops at 0%"
"Install stops at 0% when using the AOL Browser"
