windows xp update is almost done, except the cd drive

Hello, I have finally got my windows xp pro install going. I was
running windows me. I have everything working except reading cd discs
in my pioneer dvd drive. When any cd is inserted, the computer will
completely hang (stops responding) and requires a forced reboot. If I
never insert a cd, the computer works properly. The odd thing is if I
start up in safe mode, all cds can be used with no hangs.

I have done all the patch updates via windows update service
I am running Norton AV 2004.
I believe all spyware is removed.

My dvd drive is a pioneer 104 series.
When I was running ME, the drive works properly.

My hardware is a k6-2 450 with 196 megs ram
harddrive is 40 gigabyte.

Any ideas?

I had the same Problem with my Pioneer 103.
Just try a 80-wire ide-cable. Workes fine in my system
