Vista set the Network Automatically.
So the thing to do is to connect the two computers via a Switch, or cross
over cable (which is the same as WinXP).
Then configure on each computer the sharing.
Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings,

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is
allowed to be shared.
