Windows XP trouble connecting to NT4 SP6a

I'm having enormous trouble connecting a XP client to a NT4 SP6a server.
Browsing the folderstructure from the XP client to shares on the server is
fine in the beginning, but gets slower and slower after 1-1,5 mins of heavy
browsing. Explorer hangs after when it is slow enough. If I leave the
computer alone for a few minutes, everything is up to speed again.
Repeating the prosedure, slows the XP box down again.

I have Wins and DNS installed on the NT box, and the XP client is configured
to use these services. It is also configured as a H node (the other
computers is Windows98, no trouble there). The XP client is a domain member
(no problem adding to domain). If I connect to a Windows XP computer the
browsing speed on folders is fantastic. On the NT4 server it is sloooow.

The customer does not have an internetconnection, så I have not updated the
server or the client. Client is SP1, server is SP6a

I have tride with/without antivirus, stopped computerbrowser on the client,
changed MTU size, change tcpwindows size, maxtcpwindows size.... and now
I'm stuck. Anyone bother to help a tired techie from Norway? :)

Erick,

Not sure if this will help but it resolved an issue I was having and it came form Microsoft Support.
Do not assume the entry exist I had to add it. Anything you do not understand Email me
can you try as per KB 328890 setting a TCP acknowledgement
frequency to a minimum. This can be done by setting the following reg key to
1. Can we try this and see how the file copy goes.

Set the following Reg key to 1.

Subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\<I
nterface GUID>

Entry:

TcpAckFrequency

Value Type:
REG_DWORD, Boolean

Valid Range:
1, 2

Default:
2
