I bought Emachine PC that came with wxp home (ghost image). I will
upgrade hard drive, motherboard and videocard and reintall wxp home.
Since changes in hardware are large, Windows that came with Emachine on
CD's won't install. I have a standalone version of wxp home. Is it
legal to install standalone wxp home and use the serial number of
Emachine (on the label on the back side of the case) or do I have to
contact Microsoft to get new serial number? I tend to think I may
because I paid for the whole package,- software and hardware.
Otherwise, it would be a complete rip-off on the part of Microsoft.

If Windows XP was preinstalled by eMachine and you
do not replace the current motherboard with the exact
eMachine replacement, your eMachine version of Windows
XP is not going to activate since it is looking for the same BIOS.

All you can do is to purchase a conventional "Full Version" of
Windows XP and proceed with a "Repair Install".

A preinstalled OEM version of Windows XP cannot be used
with a different type of motherboard. The license is tied to
a specific motherboard model and BIOS and cannot be transferred.

NO! The stand-alone XP Home may be a Retail key and the original eMachine
CD Key is an OEM. OEM keys can not be used with Retail CDs.

The rip-off is not on Microsoft's part. They permit computer
manaufacturer's to install a reduced priced version of XP. These version
will not be suppored directly by Microsoft but by eMachine. it's is
eMachine's fault for sell a bundled OEM version.
