Windows XP SW Installation Problems

I've been trying to install software for an HP scanner.
For some reason it freezes halfway through the process and
refuses to complete. It appears to have other nasty side
affects. In explorer, I can't select properties on
folders any longer. Systems also seems to take for ever
to start up. I'm guessing there is a half completed
install hanging things up but I have no idea what to do to
correct this. I checked the add or remove programs and
there is nothing in there that corresponds that I can get
rid of. Any suggestions?

It might have been helpful if you had identified the scanner (model name,
model number) and the software you want to install in your original post.
However, here is what you would do with that information:

1. Check with HP or Microsoft whether the scanner is fully compatible with
Windows XP.
2. Check that you are using the latest driver (which you would obtain from
the HP web site.)
3. Check that you are using the latest version of the software you want to
install.
4. Go to the software vendor's web site and print the installation
instructions for the software.
5. Try the install again. The installer will realize that a partial install
had previously been attempted - that shouldn't be a problem.
6. If you continue to experience problems with your software, you will need
to contact the software vendor for further assistance.

Thanks Tom

Unfortunatly doesn't seem to help. I've tried installing
several more times and the scanner software isn't the
problem. I haven't a clue whats the problem.. While it
acts the same after each failure, it fails after a
different software install everytime. FOllowing is
description of what it does.

I'm trying to get a new computer up and running.
Unfortunatly, every time I do it some problem occurs and
it refuses to do any more software installs. At first I
thought it was associated with a driver for a scanner or
a printer. However after the 5th attempt to laod the
software, where everytime this happened at a different
time after a different software install I don't know what
the problem is. What I do lknow is that microsoft
updates download but refuse to install. Other
applications also refuse to install. If I kill the
install from the task manager, any other programs I
attempt to install tell me to finish the previous
install. If I restart and try to install software, it
hangs halfway through the install. Restarts take for
ever. Seems to hang once the desktop comes up but I get
an hourglss for about 10 minuts before it will let me use
anything on the taskbar. I can't look at the properties
of any of the folders on any of the hard drives. I can
look at properties for files and the roots of a hard
drive. I can look at properties of anything on a CD or
over the network.

Any suggestions for some troubleshooting? It looks to me
like something is getting corrupted or not cleaned up
following a software install. How can I find the problem
and clean it up? Repeated installs of the OS are getting
me know where. All of the software is Windows XP
compatible and so is all the hardware.
