windows XP style

I cannot change my windows style from CLASSIC back to XP.
I can access the drop-down list for the option to change
the syle but when I select and apply the window pops up
PLEASE WAIT and the background turns gray and nothing
happens! I have to shut down my laptop manually and
restarted with nothing changed. Any help would be greatly
appreciated!
