All,

When I start my PC I have the following problem:

Everything starts fine, I then get the Windows XP
Professional 'splash' screen which sites therre for about
60secs and then a black screen!!! There is no HDD
activity and I can not get inot Windows. After restarting
the PC 5-10 times it eventually goes into Windows, but as
you can imagine this is more than a little annoying!

I have tried changing the power options to ALWAYS ON, and
have tried using different refresh rates, but still tono
avail. I have also tried a different monitor on the
system again to no avail.

Any Ideas??

All help greatly appreciated, if possible could you please
reply to (e-mail address removed).

Many thanks
Rob

I have exactly the same problem.
It started this Summer, and I would often have to reboot
10-20 times to actually get Windows to start up.
The problem began when I was trying to play my copy of
Enter The Matrix, (big mistake). I couldn't play it because
I didn't have the version of DirectX that it needed, so I
updated to 9.0a or whatever it is, and from then on, I have
had this problem.
However, I managed to fix it for the majority of the
Summer, through changing my Graphics Drivers to older ones,
and running some sort of problem checking program, (it
wasn't ScanDisk, I just cannot remember the name, it ran
when I booted up i.e. before I even logged on/got to the
log on screen).
I recently installed a few virus scanners, and found 2
Trojans and 2 Trojan downloaders. I immediately deleted
them, and rebooted. This, however, sparked off the problem
again, my PC just wouldn't reboot, and I had to turn it off
at the plug to eventually get it to boot up.
I've tried reverting back to old Nvidia drivers, but this
didn't have any effect, (and anyway, most new games these
days won't run with those old drivers). I tried to remember
what that 'scanning thing' was called, but I just can't.

If anyone could help I would be grateful.

I used to have this problem with my HP Pavilion. It would
hang on shutdown and startup. Your not using a HP by
chance?
