Windows XP straight to Windows 7 is a clean installation anyway - completely
clean.

You don't backup the applications - you have to have the original
installation media.

Uninstall the Dell Support software.

What are the hardware specifications for your machine? Core2Duo 2+GHz?
2+GB RAM? 40+GB free HDD space?

Focus on one question per thread. If you ask multiple questions on
UNRELATED topics then don't expect all or even most of them to get
addressed.

Do you actually find a dcsa.exe file on your host (make sure to include
hidden files in the search)? Did you recently clean out some malware?
This could be a remnant startup entry in the registry that was left
behind (since often the cleanup by anti-malware programs focuses on
getting rid of the pest and not every trace of it, especially if it
hasn't anything to do with the pest itself).

Use SysInternals' AutoRuns to show all startup items for Windows.
msconfig.exe (included in Windows) only shows the common startup items
in the Startup folder in the Start menu and the Run keys in the registry
but there are lots more startup locations in the registry that AutoRuns
will show. You can even do a search on "dsca" to see if any startup
items have that string in them (as a filename).

What did upgrading to another version of Windows beyond your current
version have to do with your question about dsca?

Why do you need to backup *programs*? After installing the new OS
(which should always be a fresh install), just get the install discs for
the applications and reinstall them. It's the data files that you need
to backup to ensure you keep them. Of course, creating a separate
partition on the same or different hard disk to store your data files is
recommended so they are separate from the partition in which you
[re]install the OS.

Also, I might upgrade to Windows 7.

You can *not* upgrade for Windows XP to Windows 7. You have to do a
clean installation of Windows 7, if you want it.

How do I backup the programs to CD?

Backing up programs is generally useless. Except for a very
occasional very small program, all programs have entries and
references within the registry and elsewhere in \windows. It can't be
run under Windows unless it was installed in that copy of Windows. So
if you reinstall Windows or cleanly install another version of
Windows, having a backup of programs won't help you at all, and you
will have to reinstall your programs from the original media after you
reinstall Windows.

well, if your machine is running xp
then it is unclear if your computer
can run win7 without upgrading
the hardware as well.

basically if your pc is not able to run
vista then it may not be ready to run
win7.

for now I would focus on the issue
at hand and then worry about installing
win7 later.

---------------------

in regards to that error msg at startup,
that file infers Dell Support.

so you can try clicking on start>
run>msconfig

after you type and enter msconfig go
to the startup tab and look for any
line referencing dell support and
uncheck it, then apply.

this should prevent that error msg
from showing up.

-----------------------

on the other hand, you might want
to be able to have dell support,

so by reinstalling that utility would also
alleviate the "not found" error.

-----------------------

and yet there is one more option.

if the error recently showed up you
can likely initiate a system restore
point and restore your pc back to
a functional / error-free time.
