Dan

When I start my computer it says "We apologize for the
inconvenience but windows did not start successfully"
then list the following options:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Last Know Good Command Prompt
Start Windows Normally

Whichever option I choose it just restarts the system and
goes back to the above message. Does anyone know how to
resolve this problem?

I don't have the windows xp disc at my service. HP is sending me a
recovery disc to help in the matter. But, does this mean everything
on my computer will be lost. Is there anyway to back it up to my
external hard drive? Or is there
anything I can do to not lose all the information on my computer. Will
the recovery cd work? And if it does can I do a system restore to an
early date and have all the information there. Are there any other
options? PLEASE HELP!!!!! DESPERATE TO KNOW ASAP

Unfortunately, that's the drawback of the kind of setup you have. Your best
safeguard against this with this type of setup is to make frequent backups
and store them where you can get to them even if your hard drive fails.
Other repair options that we can offer require the XP CD and if this is a
relatively new computer, it's a good investment to help take care of issues
such as this.

As with anything else, there's no guarantee its options would fix the
problem but at least you would have other tools at your disposal though in
the event of a hard drive failure, even XP's tools won't help, for that,
again, you need a backup.

I'm assuming from what you've posted, your data is not backed up?
