Hi There.

I have accidentaly deleted a few files on my pc when trying to get rid of a
virus that is affecting my hosts file. In doing so i now can not open my pc,
not even in safe mode. I can only reboot so far but my pc wont go onto the
usual log on screen. I do get the nice XP blue screen but it will not go any
further, and I can not stop it, nor go any further.

Hope some one can help, I'm not sure how I can do any reinstallations of XP

Thanks

Did you try booting to the "last known good configuration" as well as
to Safe Mode?

By "the nice XP blue screen" I take it you mean the initial Windows XP
startup screen and not a "Blue Screen Of Death" error message. If it
is the B.S.O.D. then we need the complete text of the error message
from that screen in order to be able to help you to resolve it.

But if you are not getting any error message and cannot boot into
Windows XP using any of the Startup Menu options then your next best
option is likely to do a Repair Install as per the instructions at
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Good luck

The HOST file is not critical to XP starting successfully. It sounds like
the virus has done more damage than messing around with one file. Or there
may be more than one virus. Are you able to boot to safe mode and perform
removal of the malware there?

You've asked about reinstalling Windows. Unfortunately, chances are the
virus/malware will still be on the system after a reinstall or repair. A
repair install of Windows may get you up long enough to do surgical removal
of the intruders but you would have to know exactly what they are and have
removal directions on hand. On the other hand, a repair may only get you up
and running long enough to grab data. Or may make no difference at all.

How to repair Windows depends on what you have available to repair or
reinstall. If the system came with XP pre-installed, you'll need to follow
the manufacturer's directions. Otherwise, see the following article:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341

Last resort but effective: Use whatever means available to grab what data
you can and do a complete rebuild of the system.
