Windows XP Standby Lock up

When my pc goes into standby mode, it sometimes locks up, resulting in me
having to pull the plug to get the computer re-started, obviously not a
desirable situation.
I explained this to HP technical support the other day and was told that
this was a known problem with pc's plugged into surge protectors (???) -
could this be right or is it just a way of not acknowledging a probem??

Hi A,

If that's a known problem, I'd love to see the documentation on it....They
blew you off as they either can't fix the problem or don't want to go
through the steps to properly diagnose it. Standby issues such as these are
nearly always driver related. I would start by reinstalling and or updating
the video drivers, then try again to use standby. If it still doesn't work,
proceed to the sound card, motherboard, and other hardware pieces.

Software (drivers) don't go bad. Either something was
changed in software (new drivers loaded) or the drivers are
the same ones that worked just fine previously.

Is it hardware or software. What changed? Everything....

What does Device Manager and the Event (system) logs report?

Meanwhile HP comes with a comprehensive hardware diagnostic
(also available on their web site) sometimes called PC
Doctor. Execute it.

Plug-in protectors can even make surge damage easier to an
adjacent computer. Don't know how they cause sleep mode
problems - and this from one who does work and analysis at the
IC level. Meanwhile, collect facts. Confirm what is known to
be working properly so that you can move on to other
suspects.

The latter. They're saying the current is _too_ stable for the
computer; that's just nonsense.

Surge protector does essentially zero in stabilizing current
or 'cleaning' electricity. Look on the box. Threshold or
let-through voltage is how much for 120 volt service? 330
volts? That means a protector does absolutely nothing -
stabilizes nothing - until something in excess of 330 volts
occurs. How often does that happen? Typically once ever
eight years. So for eight years, the power strip protector
does nothing.

More often plug-in protectors create unnecessary damage.
Not just to the PC. Unnecessary and excessive damage to the
wallet. Plug-in protectors are ineffective, often grossly
undersized, and over priced. They sell on myth and rumors
such as 'stabilizing current'.

What power strip protectors do makes the HP tech suggestion
that much more puzzling.
