Windows XP Splash Screen Lock Up

NEED HELP!

system:
abit kt7a-raid motherboard
amd t-bird 1.3ghz
kingston 256mb ram
ibm 60gb 7200 rpm hdd
xtasy geforce3 ti200 video card
plextor 24x40x24 cdrw
mistumi fdd

system locks up intermitenly while booting up on the
splash screen. when splash screen appears dim, before it
gets bright and blue bar goes across, it will lock up.
however, it boots fine sometimes...is it a hardware
issue? if reformatted countless number of times and get
same results...can someone please help.

Have you see any error messages in the event log?

I would suggest you to check the vedio card if it is not an on-board card. Power off the PC and unplug the AC power cord.
Open the chassis and remove the AGP display card. Clean the gold pins with a soft rubber and blow out any dirt/dust inside the AGP slot using a can of compressed air. After cleaning, place it back properly and firmly into the AGP slot. You may need to do the same for the ram sticks.
CARE: don't touch the ramchips with your bare hand otherwise the static charges may cause permanent damages on the ramchips. You can also put boths hands onto a metal frame to release the static charges.
Also, check all the internal and external devices to ensure they are not losen and/or bad contact.
Update to the latest XP compatible drivers for all the devices may also be helpful.

If still of no avail, try perform a repair install of XP.
