I'm curious if anyone has had problems with Windows XP
service pack 2. I have downloaded the SP2 installation
multiple time in the last few days, and it appears to be
corrupt and will not install properly. However, the
errors very from unable to install an extracted file to a
blunt File is Corrupt message during the file extraction
process.

There it is again. MVP's recommending turning off AV software while
downloading. I know its a MA site download but machine is still open to
attack.
Why can the MVP's not agree on this? Some say its a no-no others recommend
it.

One of little knowledge

Ensure you turn off your antivirus software during the installation.
Additionally, ensure that you're downloading SP2 directly from Microsoft.

Turning off AV software is recommended for any OS update. Since it hooks into the file system for monitoring, it can cause problems. As long as you're running a solid firewall (inbound at least) then you can turn off your AV software for the duration of the update.

You both misread each other post.
1st You don't turn off the virus program until the xp sp2 is
downloaded. Then you disconnect or unplug your internet connection.
They you can turn off. (Nortons & others may need to be stopped in
services.msc not disabled) Then finsh the install.

I downloaded XP SP2 last nite and upon completing of install and reboot i
lost my broadband connection settings although it appeared ok in device
manager....a lot of other programs also seemed to stop working.

Upon uninstall of service pack 2 i discovered my computer started finding
all the plug and play hardware that seemed to disappear. I have a HP
Pavilion 7935 and was careful to reccomend all updates advised by HP and ran
windows update several times before loading XP SP2.

What i have come to find out is most of my hardware drivers including my
ethernet card has not had any updated drivers since i bought my
system..........so now goes my hunt to the individual manufactures for
separate pieces of hardware to try to update to drivers that support XP SP2.

guess what......HP states that they provide Windows Update with all the
updated drivers for the equipment in their systems..........SOMETHING is
missing.
