One of my computers on my network is hanging at shutdown since 10/12. I have
a Windows screen that says: Installing update 1 of 3... Do not turn off or
unplug your computer. It will turn off automatically.

This has been going on all night.
What can I do?
How do I disable/shutdown my computer?

Help!

Mine has exact same problem. Does MS read and address any of these issues?

I've got exactly the same thing - I cant shut down the computer, CTRL/ALT/DEL
does nothing. I'm thinking about unplugging it tonight and letting the
battery run down!! But I'm not confident that this will fix it when it get
back up. Still its good to know I'm not alone!

I have this on several computers running XP Pro SP2 in the office. I've been
having to hold down the power button for it to shut off, then turn it back
on. When it comes up, it looks ok, but the updates haven't been installed.

Still looking for an answer!

Restart and tap F8 until you get advanced startup menu then use last
known good to get back into system. Then set the updates to manual so
they don't try to install again untill you're ready. There are two
things I've been seeing on a lot of these systems (I work phone
support for Gateway) they're full of adware and they're running
multiple antivirus programs. Not sure which one is causing it, might
be both. I remove one of the AV's and point them in the right
direction to remove the adware.
