Plug in a known, good working serial (input) device.
Start the computer. The "found new hardware" window
appears and just after it disappears the computer shuts
down.

Serial device works on another computer just fine.
If the serial device isn't plugged in the computer behaves
just fine. There is not another serial device to try on
this computer. There have never been any other serial
devices on this computer. Computer is about one month
old. Settings for the serial port are correct in the
system bios and in the Device Manager.

Any ideas what could be causing this?
Thanks!

Annie, if you had another serial device you could test the Serial Port
on the Motherboard. Are both Computers using
WinXP? Is the Serial Device compatible with WinXP?
