Hi

I am having problems shutting down a windows xp pro SP2 machine. When you
press the shutdown button on the start menu the shutdown dialog box
(shutdown, reset) does not appear and the machine stops responding to input
(mouse/keyboard). The only way to shutdown is using the power button.

The strange thing is, if you then restart the computer, the shutdown works
fine, time after time. It appear to be a problem only if the machine has been
running for awhile.

The machine is pent 2.8, 256 meg and is part of a domain. The only
applications used are Office 2003 basic and internet. It is connected to the
network via a DLink 11g wireless card.

Apart from the shutdown problems, the machine works flawlessly.

Any help would be appreciated.

The reason it shuts down fine soon sfter xp has run a short time is that
not much has run within the OS,and the user(s) havent used much of the
resources.I'd say youre problem deals directly with only 256mb of ram,if
youre posted message was correct.Microsoft says 128 min.for xp,but....Really
512 is min,1024 gives breathing room. Also,XP and office dont really exist
together the greatest, hence, with that add on youre below ram memory min...

Highly likely you've got some program or driver in the background
that's causing the problem. I had that with an Epson D88. PC would
shut down if I didn't use the printer. If I used the printer during a
session then XP wouldn't shut down till I eventually figured out it
was the driver that was buggy. In my case updating the driver fixed
it.
