I would like to know what is causing my laptop to shut down very slow or not
at all. I have to press the power button to shut it down. OS is Win XP sp2.

Shutdown with the "laptop's" switch is not a recommended method since
this switch features can be configured differently.
 
The software the you have installed is not shutting down when requested
to by Windows. Determine which software is the culprit and you will
solve the problem. Please look in Task manager processes to see what is
the issue.
