I am searching for some help... please! I use the Windows
XP operating system. I downloaded the new service pack
and could not access the internet after the install. I
finally uninstalled the service pack, had to uninstall my
internet software and reinstall it in order to get it up
and running again. The error I was receiving is that my
modem needed to be reset. My modem tested fine. After
reinstalling the internet software, my internet is working
flawlessly, as it was before. Is there a way I can have
the security of the service pack and have my internet
too? Thanks for your help!

Service Pack still has problems , I uninstalled mine also
because it was causing my PC to Freeze Up. I have been
troublshooting since last week, and found out after
adding more RAM to my computer, and spent hours on the
phone with Microsoft, it was the Service Pack that was
not working with other Midia Software on my PC.. Just a
word of warning DO NOT Download Service Pack 2 until they
fix the problems..

I, too, made the mistake of downloading & installing SP2.
Like you, it, according to my service provider, said that
SP2 resets my modem settings in the registry. I was told I
had to reinstall my modem software but there is none.
I had to restore to *before* SP2 and after some time, my
connection mysteriously reappeared. I have been searching
for a fix to this. However, after reading this post I
concur that, until I receive notice that THIS problem is
fixed I will continue to rely on my Norton. One of the
*first* things I did was to disable the
firewall...nothing. I was down for 1/2 a business day..
not good! Now I just ignor my update notice. I am not
using *anything* exotic or non-complient. Simply XP-Pro -
with out my IIS so this *really* ticks me off.

Thanks for your advice. I will ignore my constant
reminders to update until I hear that the update has been
debuged. Thanks!

Thanks, I will wait for the "new and hopefully improved
version"!
Hi

Then I would think you need to wait to SP3 is released in
a year or two.

It is very, very unlikely that there will be a SP2a.

It takes a *very* serious and wide spread problem to make Microsoft
change a service pack (or a court order as with WinXP SP1a).

The only time Microsoft has updated a OS Service Pack because of a
bug is SP6 for NT 4.0, where a bug in the Winsock interface was
fixed (and SP6 re-released as SP6a).

You may have a very long wait since what you are waiting for will most
likely never happen.
It happened for SP-1 because of a legal settlement with Sun.
But SP-1 and SP-1a were identical except for the removal of Microsoft
Virtual Machine.
No other changes were made.
The only other instance was a Service Pack for NT-2.

What there is in SP-2 is likely all SP-2 will ever be.

Wait forever or install SP-2:
