Problem Solved!!!
I recently uninstalled B's recorder Gold and all it's associated
programmes. Everything has now returned to normal, screensavers and
power schemes all working perfectly.

B's Recorder Gold is a CD/DVD burner program produced by BHA Corp
www.bhacorp.com it is supplied as a freebie with a LG DVD burner. I
also includes B's Clip, PowerDVD and PowerProducer Gold.

I uninstalled all of these and my problems disapeared. I do not kno
which was the culprit.

But I think it proves that my problem was caused by a program othe
than windows
 
It does seem that the cd burner programs are at the bottom of quite a few
glitches that show up.
