I have Windows XP Pro installed on a PC I built, 512mb DDR Ram, 80gb HD,
1.7ghz.

I have a couple of questions:
1. Does sp1 not install Virtual Machine any more? I had a copy of
Microsofts VM and also the Sun Version and had to use those to view java on
IE.

2. I was having some minor problems with XP and wanted to run the repair
for XP. I put the XP CD into the CDrom and restarted. When the options
came up, I clicked R for repair. I got a screen that requested which file
or process to repair. My question is this:
It there any place I can find a list of files that can be repaired and the
format that these have to be entered?

Thanks in advance

Correct. That's the way the law suit went. Microsoft is out of the Java
Virtual Machine business. You have to get it elsewhere, with the recommended
source being straight from Sun.

Not exactly, but... What exactly are you wanting to accomplish?

You can still get and use MS VM.
http://www.virtualmachine.tk/
You may have to go into control panel\add remove
programs\Set Program Access and Defaults to use MS VM and
you also have to go into your IE Browser> tools\internet
options\advanced tab and scroll down to Microsoft VM and
put a check mark in JIT compiler and uncheck Sun VM
As for your repair issue you should put the disk in and
then when asked what to do you should choose Install XP
and then when it says an XP version has already been
installed on this sytem what would you like to do(or some
such words) then choose repair and it will do a complete
repair. If you are just missing XP OS files or have a
corrupt dll then you can put your disk in the drive and
close out when the autoplay selection screen comes up and
then go>start\run and type in sfc /scannow This will do
a System File Check and compare your present MS XP OS
files to those on the disk and replace any missing or
corrupt ones. Keep smiling.

In addition to Jim's comments:
1. SP1 contains Virtual Machine, SP1a does not. If you can find a copy of
SP1a (there were many in computer magazines, etc) use it.
2. It sounds like you went into the Recovery Console, not the option to
repair the existing copy of XP. To do a repair install:

Start the operating system from the CD-ROM,

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware

and then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER.

Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system

prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press
ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process. After repairing Windows XP,

you may need re-download all updates, starting with SP1, and then others, not
more than about three at a time.
