My Dell Laptop's Windows XP Home Edition operating system has become
corrupted and I can only boot in the safe mode. Windows XP was
preinstalled and I am uncertain that I was supplied a backup copy. A
Dell backup installed programs CD, when opened, does not specifically
identify a backup XP, but there is hope. Running the CD produces the
following message, "The windows installer service could not be
assessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in Safe Mode. ..."

Do I have to purchase a new XP CD and accept the possible problem about
it being an earlier version or is there another solution?

If you can boot in safe mode that might tend to indicate a driver or hw
problem. What exactly happens if you boot normally? any err msg?

You probably should have had 2 CDs, one for Windows XP and the one you
do have with the additional installed programs.

It is also possible that your computer has the Windows XP installation
files in a hidden partition on the hard drive. Contact Dell Tech
Support, using the Service Tag number from the sticker on the bottom
ot the laptop, and they should be able to give you specific
information and instructions. And if you do require a replacement CD
then you will have to obtain that from Dell.

Good luck

Watch the screen when the system reboots. If I recall it will state (upper
right corner of screen) F2 for Setup, F# for Utilty or something. This
should place you in the Dell Recovery partition and menu.
