Ok I wanted to know if someone can assist me. I purchased
a Sony Vaio desktop computer. It came with the XP windows
(XG6BQ-FPJ2X-46CMV-XX9Y7-Y7FJB). There was a problem with
it and I had to run the restore applications disk and now
the computer lost the XP and has the windows 98. I am
trying to add DSL to the computer but it is saying that I
am missing a file. I was told that I probably need to
reinstall the XP but the problem is that it came with the
computer and I dont have a disk. Is there a way that I
can get the disk or download it through the internet with
the product code. I can get in the internet with dial up.
Please advise any help would be appreciated.

Hi

Didn't you get any kind of 'Restore' XP disk from where you purchased the
PC? You should received a disk that can restore your PC to the same state
as when you bought it.

Annette;
Since Windows XP came with the computer, Sony is the only one that can
give you the CD.
Contact Sony.

Also, NEVER post your Product Key in any public forum unless you are
in the habit of passing $100 bills to any stranger you meet.

Why? Does this cost her something? It won't even cost Microsoft
anything...who would download the Home version?

Annette, the real reason to not spread your activation codes around is that
it violates your agreement with Microsoft (I suspect it does, anyways) and
it violates the rules of a lot of forums. While you can download software
almost anywhere (I have heard)...for some reason the serials are often not
included (I have heard). These criminals then have to spend hours dealing
with porno-pop-ups at warez and serialz sites ( I have heard) before they
can load their ill gotten software.

A computer repair shop owner tells me that all computers have some illegal
software...but in the Microsoft public forums...we pretend that none of ours
do. For instance...I my WinAce program informs me that I should have
registered it over 2 years ago!

I apologize but I was not aware that I should not post my
product number. I guess I should of read the community
instructions, lol. As for the recovery CD, that was what
I did but apparently it was restored to windows 98. I
will contact the place where I bought it maybe they can
help me there. Another question.... If someone has a disk
for windows XP can I use that disk and my product number.

Hi Annette

If you have a Recovery disk, you will have to use the PK with that one. As
Jupiter posted, contact Sony and explain your situation to them.

Gene;
You ask "Why?" then you give an answer, add mine to that.
There are others.
With an OEM PK, it is less likely to be used, however I stick with
what I said for the reasons listed by you, myself and others.

You also ask "Does this cost her something?"
If a Product Key is compromised, you could be in the position of
needing to call for activation for a simple reload since others have
used it. Is time worth anything?
Possibly worse yet, the key may be voided.
Windows costs about $200, so it is reasonable that the key to Windows
needs an appropriate degree of protection.
Remember it is a "Product KEY"

There are other possible costs such as encouraging piracy by providing
a key in a public forum for who ever wants to use.

Lastly your statement "A computer repair shop owner tells me that all
computers..."
"all", Really?
Can you/he prove that statement or is it all hot air?
Can you get him to make a public statement to that effect perhaps on
his web page?
Is he accountable for what he says?
Usually statements with words such as "all" are false as this one is.
Are you sure you are quoting him correctly?
