Windows XP refusing to re-boot after downloading security patch

Calling all computer-literate people (of which I'm not
one): I have an eMachines computer at home that came with
Windows XP Home version. Periodically, it tells me, via a
pop-up box in the lower right corner of screen, that there
are available updates. A week ago, it asked if I wanted
to update a Windows security patch. Of course I said
Yes. At the time, I had just started running an anti-
popup ad program ... AdAware, I think. Well, I kept
AdAware on while the the security patch downloaded, and
the computer then asked if I wanted to RESTART when it
finished the download. Again, I clicked Yes. The
computer hasn't been able to re-boot since then ... the
Windows XP logo comes up, I can hear the hard drive
humming, and then I get a black screen with lots of white
type on it noting that there's a problem re-booting. The
white type tells me I have "x" seconds to select a method
of re-starting Windows ... examples: Last Known Good
Configuration, Start Windows Normally, Safe, Safe Mode
with Networking, and Safe Mode With Command Prompt. I've
tried each, and the same result occurs every time ... the
same black screen with white type.
I can't think of anything to do, except perhaps put the
Windows XP disk in the disk drive and try the re-boot that
way. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance, and
please email me at "(e-mail address removed)."
