Windows XP Re-Install?

After downloading and applying a few "No-CD" patches for games, Win XP
Pro occassionally gives me an error message saying that a few Windows
files have been replaced by other versions. (I can't remember the exact
wording....) The "Details" button indicates that the CD-drive isn't
working properly (but it is)..... This leads me to believe that the
application was looking for the CD even though I was using the No-CD
patch. XP then asks me to either insert my WinXP Pro CD to revert the
files to the originals or ignore the message. I've ignored it so far,
but at one point, I put the WiunXP CD into the drive and it asked me
whether I wanted to install (actually re-install) WinXP.

My questions are, should I be concerned about this? Should I let the
system do this? If so, will I have to re-install all of my applications
too?

Also, I have Goback 3 on my system. If I re-install XP, should Goback 3
be disabled first?

Thanks!

Hi

'No-CD patches' are hacks so that you don't have to buy the retail version of a particular program that you have downloaded via a P2P program. If I have taken this out of context, please let me know.

You have taken this out of context. I should have mentioned that I legitimately purchase all of my software, and I use the No-CD patches because I hate searching for a CD. (I'm kind of un-organized that
way.....)

They are still hacks, though, and such hacks that modify basic system
components are asking for trouble. You would really be better without -
put in the XP CD, exit from the autorun, then go to Start - Run and run
SFC/SCANNOW

to restore original files. And if you run a NoCD patch in future and
you get that File Protection warning, let it restore the original still

Thanks for that tip. Unfortunately the only "SFC" file that I find is in c:\Windows\System32\. When I run it a get an instantaneous look at a DOS box, which then is gone just as quickly. The only SFC file
on the Windows XP CD is sfc.ex_.

Any elaboration on how to run this file to fix my problem would be appreciated.

Hi,

Start/run, type in (without the quotes)

"sfc /scannow"

If you don't add the /scannow switch, all you get is a cmd box flash (which
is what you saw).

Guys, thanks for the clarifications. But I still have a problem. That is -- when I
run SFC /scannow with my WindowsXP CD in my CD Drive, when I hit "Retry" it kicks me
right back to the Windows File Protection Error message, where I'm given 3 choices.
"Retry" kicks me right back to the error message. "More Information" gives me a
message which says that I either have inserted the wrong CD or the CD-ROM drive
isn't working. Neither is the case. I'm using the original WinXP Installation CD
and both of my CD-ROM drives are working. (I get this message using both drives.)
The 3rd choice is "Cancel" which just seems to repeat the process in an endless
loop.

I can think of only 2 possible things. Either I need to remove Goback from my
system temporarily while running SFC, or I need to insert by Win98SE CD first as a
verification check. (My WinXP version is the upgrade which requires a verification
check). BTW -- the one indication I got when running SFC /scannow was that there
was a problem with files in my dll cache. But the progress bar had barely moved
before running into the above problems.

Do any of you have any further thoughts on what to try?

If I do a complete WinXP re-install, will I lose all of my installed applications?

Thanks!
Bert

Well, I guess that it pays to be patient..... It to a lot of clicking on "Retry", but I
finally got thru the SFC process. Too early to tell if it helped. (Let's hope so.) I
appreciate all of the help, guys.
