I am trying to get windows xp professional edition to do a
defrag and scan disk. How do I get the system to do these
tasks?

You get it to do a defrag by executing the defrag program. You
can do so by typing DEFRAG at the Start | Run line.

You can't get it to do a scandisk because there is no scandisk
program in XP. The XP equivalent is called chkdsk, and you can
run that from the Start | Run line too.
