Recently tried to used XP Pro. Good system, simple
install. Great difficulty in getting system to run after
that; hangs in boot phase more often that not, have to
shed fresh installations by using restore points.
Shouldn't be a software/driver issue. Unable to pin down
the underlying cause. Have gone back to 98SE temporarily.

Check out your hardware:

Run "memtest86" (download from http://www.memtest86.com)
to thoroughly check out your memory. You should get
zero errors.

Run a full set of hardware diagnostics. ("diag378.exe",
downloadable from ftp://ftp1.dell.com/diags, after a few
complaints, will run on most non-Dell computers.)
You should get zero errors.

I have a similar problem. XP Pro runs perfectly fine on
my machine. However, a few days ago I installed SP1 and
all recommended updates. Somewhere my USB ports stopped
working, no communication with printer and camera. Plug-
and-play simply didn't work.
I used restore points to go back and, hey, my printer and
camera and USB ports are working again. So clearly
something odd with one (or many) of the recent updates.
My computer is a Sony Vaio bought in March this year, so
made for XP.

Now, when I try to install SP1 again I get the following
message:
I know this is not much of help and it could be some of
the recommended upgrades that cause the problem, not SP1.

Does anyone else have the same problem or know how to get
SP1 installed as it is labelled "critical" update.
