I have a question regarding the functionality of a file share on an SBS2003.
The server is a mail as well as file server on a small network with three
users + the administrator account. I now have experienced a problem from only
one of the client computers running Windows XP Pro SP2.

The share on the server is mapped as a network drive on the client computer
(Z:) and is properly configured in "My Computer". When I try opening the
network share from within the Explorer shell, there is no problem what so
ever in accessing the various subfolders of the share. The problem occurs
when trying to access any files from a browsing window and especially from
Outlook 2007:

When trying to attach a file to an email message in Outlook 2007, I simply
click the "Attach" button and hence get the Browse-window, letting me choose
from where that I want to pick the file to attach. By clicking the drop-down
menu and clicking on the mapped network drive under "My Computer", I get a
peculiar dialog telling me that "The root folders are being initiated". Below
is a status meter, telling me that the computer is working. After a while,
the folders that are present in the shared folder get visible, but as soon as
I try to double click any one of them, the computer gets totally stuck and
will not show neither the desired folder, nor any other folders. From this
situation I only have the option of shutting down Outlook.

As previously stated, when I open the network drive through Windows
Explorer, browsing through the folders is working just fine. The problems
hence only occurs when trying to access the folders from within Outlook.

Does anyone have a good answer to this question? Is this, perhaps, the wrong
discussion to put it in? If so, will anyone who knows where it is to be put,
please put it there?

Yours thankfully

Generally, it would probably be best to post such questions in
microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs....I'm crossposting my reply there.

You might post an unedited ipconfig /all from the server & this problem
client.

Event log errors might help.

Do you use folder redirection via group policy for My Documents?
Do you use offline files?

What about Word? Excel?

No, I don't.

No, I don't

Those two have not been investigated, yet.

LAN-card powersave options can give some pretty weird bugs, I wouldn't rule
that out as a cause.
