I have a Dell laptop that crashed I think due to a virus, I used the
instalation disk to do a chkdsk and there were no error on the hard drive. I
proceeded to the next step and do a repair with the intallation disk when
setup gets to the point where the product key must be entered it will not
accept the correct product key. Anybody have a clue what I can do?

Assuming you are using the media Dell sent with the laptop and the product
key that is on the sticker that Dell put on it - then you are either typing
something incorrectly (it happens - have someone else read the key to you)
or you should contact Dell to find out what's wrong with the CD/Product key
combination they sold you and have vowed to support (whether or not your
warranty is still in effect is not at issue here - this is the OS they sold
you - and as the OEM - they support.)

It is an original version of Windows XP Professional and I have checked it
several of times with other folks helping the product key being entered is
the correct one.

So your not trying to do the repair install with the Dell provided media, if
you were it wouldn't be asking you for a product key. Which product key are
you using? What type of XP media are you using, retail or OEM?

Sound like you are confusing the version of XP. Dell is using a
tweaked OEM version which their included CD Key would work with.
Original retail version will never accept any OEM CD Key versions.
Generic OEM install CD "may" also never accept the Dell's CD Key
version.
