Windows XP Professional - Hesitation

Recently I have noticed that when I close programs, XP
Professional sort of hangs for 1-2 seconds and is then
fine. It hasn't been happening until recently and I have
not changed anything on my system so I cannot for the life
of me figure out what it could be.

I'm trying to avoid having to format, but if that will fix
it I will do it. So far I have run chkdsk, defrag, a virus
scan, an ad scan and a mem test, all came back with no
problems.

Any ideas?

This sort of hesitation could come from any one of a large number of sources. Anything from having a removal media device empty to
file sharing with another system where it is necessary to update the contents of that disk to your system to a program which tracks
changes to the hard drive which has to update to hardware problems with the disk or memory. Troubleshooting could take a lot of
trial and error.

You might try a clean boot (no user run programs) and see if there is any difference in performance. If there is you can recheck
the items one at a time to see which one causes the delay and deal with it.

Did anything on the system change about the time you first noticed the problem ... new software or hardware added for example?

When you open the task manager how many processes are running? Are there any user run ones you do not recognize?
