Windows XP Professional doesn't recognize dvd drive

Hello all,

I have a DVD-reader/CD-burner installed on a PC running (1.2 MHz) Windows XP
professional SP2 (Dutch), but windows recognizes it as a CD-reader/writer
only. Under Dvd-/cd-rom station in hardware management it says: "HL-DT-ST
RW/DVD GCC-4482B". In properties it says that the hardware works correct.
When I click on "problem solver for dvd", in the problem solver, windows
tells me that this page cannot be displayed. When I try to reinstall help
files from the CD, the installer tells me that windows help is already
installed and won't let me install it again. I'm stuck. Can anyone get me
going again to get this dvd reader to work?

There are many reasons for this. If the drive is old enough that it only
burns DVD+R/RW disks, Windows has no icon or description for it.
Alternatively, Windows may have just decided to be bloody minded and not to
label the drives correctly. They usually continue to function without
problems. My 2 DVD burners have been labelled as 'CD drive' for a number of
months now. They otherwise work correctly.
 
Still, it won't work. Windows media player, Nero's Show Time and Quicktime
won't play any DVD I put in he drive, and I can't use Windows help to fix
the problem.

Is there anyone else who can help?

I don't know what the problem is, but for a bit of fun, try this
filter driver viewer. It is supposed to show any upper and lower
filter drivers for a storage device. Since I don't have a DVD drive
in the house, I cannot tell you what is "normal". The idea here is,
sometimes a program you are using, has loaded a filter driver
that makes it impossible for the device to work properly. It
is possible, if you use a lot of burner packages, to have
conflicts between them due to messing with the driver stack.
But I don't know enough about the process, to suggest what a
"bad" one would look like.

I'm having issues with my DVDR/RW drive not allowing me to use DVD+RW as
basically a large floppy drive. I've run both of these programs to see what
capabilities the drive was reporting, and oddly enough, it does not show DVD
RW at all. I can burn to DVD+r, DVD+r DL, and even read DVD+rw, but I cannot
use it as a drive at all.

Any help?

I've tried it on a friend's laptop with vista, and no issues. Any help?

Hardware standards are reported by programs like Nero InfoTool.
This would tell you what the drive supports. Presumably this
can be downloaded directly from Nero, if you can figure out a
URL.

Random access is not provided by just any standard. DVDRAM, for
example, is a random access standard for DVD. But requires
appropriate rewritable media.

discs. For UDF-formatted discs, which are considered faster,
compatible device drivers or software such as InCD or DLA are
required. Windows Vista can natively access and write to
UDF-formatted DVD-RAM discs."

It would take less time, for you to research this stuff directly.
Every time I look, there is yet a new method of writing to optical
media. Try cdfreaks forums or cdrlabs, for example.

Message: I can't burn to DVD +R DL media. I have HP DVD writers 640i and
1040 (brand new) and an NEC DVD-RW ND-2500A (all support DVD +R DL media).
These are on seperate machines. Used different media types (verbatim,
Memorex, Dynex), All work fine with VISTA. Using Sonic Record Now Ver. 7.0
and with the HP DVD 1040 Nero Express 7. I've tried it with a clean XP
install combined with XP SP2. My firmware is up to date for the 640i DVD
writer. They are DVD +R DL capable. Confirmed with the Manufacturer. I
receive a Sense error when attempting to create a data disk (even a small
text file). See error below:
